I recently went on a ‘mommy strike’ and have been sharing my experiences about it in a ‘logbook’ type fashion on Facebook. Much to my surprise, the response has been overwhelming and I have been asked to share it more publicly. So here it is…my very own blog.
Please feel free to share:) I have a feeling I am not the only crazy working mother out there!!
Quita..it was also the highlight of my entire week!! One day maybe we can actually have a glass of wine in real life and I can give your little cuties a squish! J
I need to tell you that when Dylan came up with this I had to walk out of the house I was laughing so hard. Tears were streaming down my face and if they had seen me, they would have know something was up!! I couldn't get it together for the rest of the night! J
Jessica, you are a much braver woman than me to have done this! I'm a new follower---watching this on the Today Show this morning as I post this. Due to working night shift and having fibro and back issues, I've tried to get hubby and son to clean without much success. Kudos to you!
Working nigh shift is hard all on its own..adding back and fibre issues must be a nightmare for you. Tell your hubby and son if hey don't step up I am coming over with my super hero cape on to whip them into shape:) Best of Luck. J
I learned about your Blog from USA Today. I have a fourteen year old lovely daughter who has become an unfortunate victim of entitlement. I would love to do this. I am also an A Type, super clean individual, however I feel it is necessary for my daughter to have a reality check. We are all tremendously over scheduled, busy being busy people, who need to slow down and evaluated the basics. I declare henceforth that I will not empty another gym bag! Recycle another gatorade bottle (unless it is mine:) or pick up any more UGGs that have been carelessly discarded in the doorway.. Thanks for this!
How can you see my backdoor? lol When I read your comment I felt that you may actually be in my house looking a the gym bags, Gatorade and Uggs. Since you wrote this, have you stuck to it and not picked them up? I'll admit I just put a pair of Uggs away. Shhh, don't tell anyone:) J
Hello - We saw you on the "Today show" The Dr Drew Show on HLN would love to have you on tonight. Can you provide and email please? Thank you. Cristina Hernandez
Hi Jessica! I work at Steve Harvey's new show, airing weekdays on NBC, before "Ellen". I would LOVE to talk to you. Please email me at Calli.Dollinger@steveharveytv.com.
Found out about you JUST NOW via Huffpost on FB, because evidently I've been living under a rock for a week or however long its been since your story exploded.
I went on strike very early on in my marriage, before kids. That preemptive maneuver has saved me a lot of stress and heart-ache.
Love that Jessica did this! I, too, have done this via Parenting onTrack/Parenting Solutions for Your Family created by Vicki Hoefle, author of Duct Tape Parenting. The information I gathered during the "Say Nothing, Do Nothing" week was invaluable. And since then, we have been training and empowering our 4 children (ages 10, 8, 4, and 2) to participate in their own lives. This allows my husband and I more time to connect with them and enjoy things as a family. We do not have to be their maids...they can pack their own lunches, do their own laundry, help plan meals, etc. It is not always pretty, but they are learning and feel confident in the choices that they make. Thank you Parenting on Track and Vicki Hoefle!! (www.parentingontrack.com)
Jessica - Your blog is great, and I can only imagine your week. How exciting all the press this is receiving! Congrats on sticking to your guns :) See you next time we have to take suicide intervention.
Did you know that we cannot take the one day refresher again and we have to take the entire two day training. Ugggg, I just found this out and feel I may need to talk myself off the ledge! J
ROFLMAO - I was imagining those little kinda-see-through baggies, but omg these are awesome!! I totally cannot stop laughing. Where the heck did you find such thing?
Hi, moms! How inspiring is Jessica?! Are you tired of cleaning up after your families? Our show is looking for moms who want to go on strike THIS WEEKEND! We'd love to hear from you. Please email us asap: Talkshow.losangeles@gmail.com Thank you!!
Ha ha! I did this same thing about ten years ago, my children reported me to child protective services....... The social worker explained to them that I was do a magnificent job as Mother and only wished she had thought to do the same thing when her children were young. I won too! I can say, one day they will look back and laugh, mine did. Good luck! Tisha
I'm sure you were not laughing when the social worker showed up to ask questions!! Yikes! I am glad that a professional was able to back you up...and I'm sure they will look back and laugh. I think mine will too.:) J
Hello from Calgary!! This comment made me giggle...so yes, we can be best friends as long as you drink red wine and have a South African accent. It's my favourite accent EVER!! J
Thank you:) I love that this made you laugh....tears were streaming down my face when my husband packed the lunches. Humour keeps everything in perpective!! J
My kids are still too young, but if I do encounter this resistance from them later on in life, I will definitely go on strike. This is hilarious. Cheers from South Africa. chisoullife.blogspot.com
They say we learn by experience. Children, especially teenagers, need to see, to feel what we are talking about. Otherwise it goes into the left ear and it comes out through the right without being processed! You've done it ...just great.

Hi Jessica just saw you on Aussie morning Sunrise programme More power to you girl!! I went on strike with my eldest when she was 16 ...I told her I was fed up with sniping at each other so we would just be friends Call me Claire I said !! it lasted 2 days till she realised that I wasn't doing ANYTHING for her that included washing clothes, driving her to friends etc the last straw was when she came out at Dinner time & asked where hers was I told her it was whatever she wanted to cook for herself LOL next thing I got an apologie & a Please can you be my Mum again I'm not saying she was perfectly tidy after that but I guess the point was made...Ignore the nasty comments some people obviously have a really perfect life !! YEah Right LOL
This is wonderful. Saw something about your blog on AOL and had to come read. I'm married and my daughters are 9 and 7. It's an ongoing battle with the three of them when it comes to household chores. I "only" work part time so I don't mind taking on the bulk of household tasks. But, I do want a life outside of my part-time job and housekeeping. A great example of what I deal with is, I went off to work on a Sunday from 9-5. I gave my 9 year-old a job, fold the clean kitchen towels and put them away. It was the only job I gave anyone that day. I got home and the towels were folded...by her sister. Okay. But they didn't get put in the drawer. Why not? My husband just shrugged, he didn't know. Older daughter didn't know. Nobody knew. I left them on the table. First thing I did when I woke up Monday was start in again asking my husband why they hadn't been put away yet. He just got up and did it.
This poop bag photo is the highlight of my day! Hang in there momma. A cheers from my glass to yours!
